I taught a Higher Level Thinking PD workshop to some colleagues this past year and this is one of the activities I shared that they can use with their class. It promotes higher level thinking and builds number sense. The teacher decided the solution (which I put in the middle) and the students come up with the question. The amazing thing about this activity is that you can use this for higher grades as well.

An apple unit filled with higher level thinking, scientific method experiments and activities that challenge students to justify their thinking. Included in this packet: Students will complete two scientific method experiments. What solution helps the apple retain its color the longest? Will an apple sink or float? This packet also includes higher level thinking.
